New Jersey Court Closures Amid COVID-19 Outbreak

On March 18, an announcement was made stating that the Superior Court will suspend all proceedings indefinitely. These are uncertain times, which is why if you are someone who is currently undergoing a criminal matter, you must read on and reach out to our experienced New Jersey criminal defense attorney to learn more about how this may impact your case.

Will the New Jersey court closure affect my case?

Though the New Jersey court system is closed until further notice, there are certain exceptions, which are ongoing trials and limited emergencies. After adjourning civil commitment hearings and suspending grand juries in state courts, this announcement came to the public. It is also worth noting that municipal courts will also be suspended, but for a lesser period of two-weeks and until March 27th–however, this is only as far as we know at this time. Therefore, anyone scheduled to appear in municipal court within this period will no longer do so, and instead, they should await notice with their new court date.

United States Chief District Judge Freda L. Wolfson also adjourned all civil and criminal trials that were on the schedule to start in New Jersey’s federal courts prior to April 30, 2020. This also applies to jury selection for these trials. Once courts can reopen, jury selection will commence. Finally, you should also note that individual judicial officers can proceed to hold hearings, conferences, sentencings, change of plea hearings, and bench trials, though it is strongly encouraged to do so via telephone or videoconferencing to prevent the further spread of COVID-19.
