How do I Get a Gun Permit in New Jersey?

If you are caught in violation of the firearm laws, you may face a gun charge, even if you simply made a mistake. Please read on to learn more about applying for a gun permit in New Jersey and how our experienced New Jersey criminal defense attorney can help you.

How do I apply for a gun permit?

The state of New Jersey offers two primary types of gun permits. The first is a handgun purchasing permit, also known as an HPP. Rather obviously, these are for individuals looking to purchase handguns. The other type of permit is the FPID, or firearm purchaser identification card. Individuals will have to obtain these if they wish to purchase a rifle, shotgun, or another long gun. Though the permits are different, you should note, however, that their applications are the same.

What documents will I need to apply for a gun permit in New Jersey?

If you are looking to apply for a gun permit, you will have to provide the following information:

  • A passport
  • Your driver’s license
  • Two character references
  • An executed Consent for Mental Health Records Search

Once you submit the following, the police will conduct a background check with the FBI to ensure you will not be a threat to individuals in New Jersey.

Can I carry a gun in public in New Jersey?

In some cases, the answer is yes, however, if you are someone who wishes to apply for open carry, you will have to provide a valid reason as to why they need to carry the firearm. However, New Jersey will not make it easy, and generally only allows individuals who need firearms for work or who have had threats made against them to carry in public.

What should I do if I have been denied a gun permit in New Jersey?

Unfortunately, since New Jersey is so strict on gun laws, if you made a mistake years ago and got into legal trouble, it may result in you being denied your permit. Fortunately, if this happens, you may appeal the denial within 30 days. Though the appeals process is often complex, our firm can help you obtain the gun permit you deserve, and perhaps even need.
